Raymond Loewy has been instrumental in the design of items as disparate as the streamlined locomotives of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Greyhound bus, the Lucky Strike cigarette package, the Coca-Cola soda fountain dispenser, the Gestetner duplicating machine, the interior of the Concorde supersonic jet, the paint scheme of the original Air Force One Boeing 707, and corporate logos including those for Shell oil, British Petroleum, Exxon and Canada Dry.
His greatest achievement was the Avanti, a car so forward-looking at its creation that even today its basic styling remains absolutely contemporary. The four-seat, two-door, 289 cubic inch V8-powered, fiberglass-bodied Avanti was shown at the New York Auto Show in April, 1962, and it was an instant hit. The car also was the first American production car to feature standard disc brakes. |
